Amman, Jordan

Amman

Explore Jordan’s hilltop capital through ancient landmarks, lively downtown streets, neighbourhood cafés, galleries, markets, and generous local food.

City 2–3 nights

Jordan’s layered capital, best discovered one hill at a time

Amman is both an ancient city and the energetic centre of modern Jordan. At the Citadel, traces of Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad history overlook a dense city of pale limestone buildings. Below, the Roman Theatre opens toward downtown streets filled with spice shops, bakeries, gold merchants, coffee stalls, and everyday city life.

The capital changes character from district to district. Jabal Amman combines heritage homes, galleries, restaurants, and Rainbow Street, while Weibdeh has a relaxed creative atmosphere. Contemporary dining and shopping spread across western neighbourhoods, giving visitors an engaging contrast to the historic centre.

Signature experiences

  • See the Temple of Hercules and Umayyad Palace at the Amman Citadel.
  • Visit the Roman Theatre before walking through downtown souqs.
  • Taste falafel, hummus, knafeh, and seasonal Jordanian dishes.
  • Explore the galleries, stairways, cafés, and old houses of Jabal Amman and Weibdeh.

How to experience Amman

Allow at least one full day for the Citadel, Roman Theatre, downtown, and a neighbourhood evening. Two or three nights make Amman a comfortable base for Jerash, Salt, Madaba, or the Dead Sea and create space for museums, food experiences, and local markets.

Amman is built across steep hills, so short distances on a map can involve demanding climbs. Combine walking within each neighbourhood with a private driver or licensed taxi between districts for an easier day.
