A wild descent from mountain village to desert valley
Dana Biosphere Reserve protects a dramatic system of mountains and wadis descending from the plateau near historic Dana Village toward the lowlands of Wadi Araba. The rapid change in elevation creates varied geology, vegetation, and wildlife, giving the reserve a sense of scale that unfolds most clearly on foot.
Stone-built Dana Village overlooks the valley and serves as a natural starting point for viewpoints and walks. Longer routes lead through Wadi Dana toward Feynan, while shorter guided trails focus on nature, geology, village heritage, and seasonal landscapes.
Signature experiences
- Watch changing light move across Wadi Dana from the village rim.
- Choose a trail suited to your fitness, season, and available time.
- Learn about local plants, wildlife, geology, and community conservation.
- Connect Dana with Shobak, Petra, or Feynan on a slower southern route.
How to experience Dana Biosphere Reserve
A day visit offers village views and a shorter trail, but one or two nights make the reserve far more rewarding. The well-known Dana-to-Feynan route is a substantial point-to-point hike and needs proper planning, suitable conditions, and coordinated luggage and transport.
Trail experiences change with the seasons and weather. Local guides add safety and depth, especially on longer or less obvious paths, and community-based accommodation helps keep tourism connected to conservation and local livelihoods.
